Pekka Haavisto, the current Foreign Minister of Finland, said on Thursday that he will compete for president in the election that will take place the following year.
Haavisto is seeking to succeed Sauli Niinisto, who will stand down after serving two terms as president. Haavisto, a member of the Green Party, will be making his third try to become Finland’s head of state in this election. He finished in second place in both the 2012 and 2018 elections.
At a news conference, Haavisto stated, “Recently, many Finns from very different backgrounds have contacted me and appealed for me to become a candidate in the next January’s presidential election.”
Haavisto is referring to the next presidential election in Finland, which will take place in January 2019.
